The Tianjin Government Scholarship is funded by the Tianjin Municipal Government and awarded through universities in the city, including Tianjin University (TJU). It is not one of the big fully funded awards. It is a one-year, partial scholarship that pays a fixed tuition amount and, for top-ranked applicants, a monthly living allowance and medical insurance.

That distinction matters more than most guides admit. If you apply expecting free accommodation and a four-year stipend, you will be disappointed. If you apply understanding what it actually is, it is one of the more realistic awards available at a C9-adjacent Chinese university, and you can reapply for it every year you study.

This guide covers the Tianjin Government Scholarship at Tianjin University: what it pays, who qualifies, all 14 document categories, the scanning rules that get applications rejected, and the exact timeline TJU publishes.

What the Tianjin Government Scholarship covers

The award is split into First Prize and Second Prize. Both pay tuition. Only First Prize adds the living allowance and insurance.

Master’s applicants

Master’s programs at TJU run 2 to 3 years. The scholarship runs 1 year.

A First Prize master’s award is worth roughly 47,800 RMB over the year once you add the stipend and insurance. First Prize at bachelor level comes to about 34,800 RMB.

Two things to check before you count on the money. The tuition figure is a fixed amount, not a blanket waiver, so compare it against the published tuition for your specific program. And accommodation is not mentioned anywhere in the award, which means dormitory fees are yours to cover.

The renewal detail most applicants miss

The Tianjin Government Scholarship is a one-year award that can be applied for year by year. It is open to prospective students and to students already enrolled at Tianjin University.

So a master’s student on a two-year program can hold the scholarship in year one, apply again, and hold it in year two. Nothing is automatic. You reapply, and your academic record from the previous year is what you are selling.

Nationality and health

You must hold citizenship of a country other than the People’s Republic of China, and be in good health. TJU also asks for good conduct and a willingness to follow Chinese law and university regulations.

Age and academic background

The age limits are firm and they are lower than several comparable awards. A 26-year-old with a strong high school record is not eligible for the bachelor’s track at TJU under this scholarship.

For Chinese-taught programs, you need HSK Level 5 with a minimum score of 180. Native Chinese speakers are exempt, as are applicants who completed their undergraduate or master’s study in Chinese.

For English-taught programs, TOEFL 80 or IELTS 6.0 is mandatory. Native English speakers are exempt. If you completed your undergraduate or master’s degree in English, you can submit a Certificate of Undergraduate Study in English instead of a TOEFL or IELTS score.

The English MBA program has its own bar: TOEFL 85 or IELTS 6.5.

Note the wording on the medium-of-instruction route. It substitutes for the test, but it has to be a formal certificate from your university confirming English instruction, not a line in your transcript.

Programs covered

The Tianjin Government Scholarship does not cover every program at TJU. The School of International Education publishes a program catalogue as a downloadable spreadsheet on the scholarship page, and it is worth opening before you write a word of your study plan. Applying to a program outside the catalogue wastes the application.

Tianjin University is strongest in engineering. Chemical engineering, civil engineering, architecture, environmental science and management are the departments international applicants most often target.

Application documents: all 14 categories

Everything is uploaded to the online system. There is no posting of hard copies at the application stage.

1. Highest diploma. Scanned copy. If you have not graduated yet, submit a pre-graduation certificate. Once admitted, you must present the original degree certificate plus a Degree Authentication Document at registration. Fail that check and your enrollment is cancelled.
2. Transcrieri academice. Scan of a notarized copy. If you graduate after the deadline, submit your current transcript now and the complete one before registration.
3. Pașaport. Photocopy of an ordinary passport that is still valid.
4. Tianjin Government Scholarship Application Form. Downloaded from the TJU template library.
5. Chinese or English proficiency certificate.
6. Study experience resume. The start and end dates of every education entry must be continuous, with no unexplained gaps, and the list must begin at senior middle school.
7. Study or research plan. At least 600 words for bachelor applicants, at least 800 words for master applicants, in Chinese or English.
8. Două scrisori de recomandare. Master applicants only. They must come from professors or associate professors, in English or Chinese.
9. Acceptance letter from a TJU supervisor. Master applicants only, and only if you have one. It is not required, but it strengthens a master’s application considerably.
10. Dosar de examinare fizică pentru străini. Every item on the form must be completed, and the examination has to be recent. TJU specifies a cut-off date each cycle, so check the current announcement before booking your medical.
11. Visa and transfer certificate. Only for applicants already in China. You submit a scan of your visa page and a transfer certificate from your current university.
12. Non-criminal record or student performance letter.
13. Situația financiară. Either a bank deposit certificate or an income certificate from your financial guarantor.
14. Other attachments. School of Architecture applicants must add an e-work collection and a video presentation.

Scanning and translation rules that get applications rejected

This section is short, and it is the reason a lot of otherwise competitive applications fail.

Documents must be in Chinese or English. Anything in another language needs a notarial translation, and you upload the original alongside the certified translation, not the translation on its own.

Scans must be in colour and made with an actual scanner. Photos taken on a phone or camera are not accepted. Photocopies are not accepted either.

TJU can ask for original or notarized hard copies at any point if what you uploaded is not good enough. And if any part of your application turns out to be false, you are disqualified from admission.

I have seen applicants lose a cycle over a phone photo of a passport page. Use a scanner or a library.

Cronologia aplicației

Winners receive an Admission Notice and a Visa Application Form for Study in China. For the Tianjin Government Scholarship this is the JW202, not the JW201 that Chinese Government Scholarship holders receive. You need it to apply for your X1 or X2 student visa, so keep it safe.

The review window is only 30 days for the whole applicant pool. Submitting in April or May puts you in the largest batch of the cycle. Applying in November or December is a quieter queue and gives you time to fix a rejected document.

Dates shift slightly from year to year. Confirm the current cycle on the TJU School of International Education website before you commit to a plan.

1. Open the program catalogue and confirm your target program is covered.
2. Check your age against the limit for your level. This is the fastest disqualifier.
3. Book your medical examination and sit your HSK, IELTS or TOEFL if you do not already hold a valid certificate. Test slots and result turnaround are the two things that most often push applicants past the deadline.
4. Get your diploma and transcripts notarized, and translated if they are not in Chinese or English.
5. Register at tju.at0086.cn/student and start the online application.
6. Download the Tianjin Government Scholarship Application Form and the other templates from the SIE download centre.
7. Write your study or research plan against the length minimum for your level. Name TJU faculty and research groups you want to work with. Generic plans read as mass applications.
8. Master applicants: request your two recommendation letters early, and contact potential supervisors about an acceptance letter.
9. Scan everything in colour and upload.
10. Submit, then check the email address linked to your account regularly. TJU communicates through the system.

Tianjin Government Scholarship vs the Chinese Government Scholarship

Applicants often treat these as competing options. They are not the same thing and there is no reason to pick just one.

The Chinese Government Scholarship pays more and lasts longer. The Tianjin Government Scholarship is easier to win, and it covers PhD applicants nowhere, so doctoral candidates should look at the CSC track or the university’s own awards instead.

Applying to both in the same cycle is normal. Deadlines differ, so build one calendar with every date on it.
